About the Program

The History Discipline at NVC provides opportunities for students to better understand history in a collaborative environment and prepares students for further study. History students think critically and creatively about the past and apply skills learned from historical knowledge to their educational and career goals. Our mission is to explore the past, examine our present, and take responsibility for our future.

What will I learn?

The History Discipline at NVC teaches eight different courses designed for instruction in knowledge and content of specific areas, time periods, and themes. The U.S. History core courses are taught so that students go beyond the tenets of American history, and incorporate crucial information literacy components so students are prepared for transfer to a four-year university or the workforce. Faculty in the discipline routinely offer World History, Texas History, Mexican American History, and African American History courses designed for inclusivity and exploration of local, regional, national, and global perspectives. Our faculty focus upon Course Learning Outcomes with the goal of student mastery in historical knowledge, critical thinking and analysis, and composition, as well as mastery of broader skills such as communication and social and personal responsibility so students strengthen themselves and our community. Students taking history courses at NVC will learn important skills they can apply inside and outside the history classroom, so they will succeed in all coursework at NVC and beyond.

What can I do with this course of study?

History courses at NVC provide students with directly accessible and applicable skills they can apply to other courses, transfer with to four-year baccalaureate programs, and their enhance their careers. Courses in history offer students opportunities to understand the past, the present, and the future they will participate in as citizens and leaders. Students pursuing a course of study in history are well situated for a diverse set of opportunities, from teaching, library, and archival careers, to management and administration, legal services, and community and social services. Our faculty are committed to guiding students on pathways to baccalaureate programs, and modeling Masters and Doctorate coursework and degrees in history, education, art, legal, and business programs.

What is special about this program?

The history courses offered at NVC are taught by a diverse group of expert historians. Our faculty are committed to providing students a direct and hands-on approach to learning history and succeeding at NVC, with primary materials and resources assigned for interaction and discussion. Each course is tailored by our faculty so every student has a voice, is included in course activities, and benefits from a range of teaching and learning methods utilized: from collaboration and teamwork in the analysis of assigned materials to creative and constructive application of knowledge accessed from assigned materials and individual research. Students drive our courses and faculty are energized by enthusiastic participation and contributions in-class meetings, in projects, and student progress in the program and coursework at NVC. The History Discipline at NVC offers its eight courses in a range of opportunities: face-to-face, online, 16-week, Flex, and summer; as well as a one-of-a-kind, grant-funded Study Stateside program!
